10 Shocking Man Utd Departures That Nobody Expected

1. Roy Keane

It€™s a story that hasn€™t stopped giving. Following their acrimonious departure, when the general parted ways with his lieutenant of 12 years whilst he was injured, the pair have since vilified each other in the media, launching barbs filled with bitterness and resentment at each other. It was a sad end for a relationship between captain and manager that heralded 17 pieces of silverware during a glorious era at the Theatre of Dreams. Two huge personalities, Keane finally €˜overstepped his mark€™ during a guest appearance as an analyst on the club€™s TV channel MUTV, in which he apparently lambasted several members of the first-team following an embarrassing 4-1 loss at the Riverside Stadium. The footage was never aired, but the furore regarding Keane€™s supposedly lynching comments had certainly gathered wind. Within two weeks, the contract of Manchester United€™s arguably most influential player of all-time was terminated by mutual consent.
''I had obviously lost respect for him, he had lost respect for me. Alex Ferguson thanked me for my 11-and-a-half years at the club, and I had to remind him I had been at Manchester United for 12-and-a-half years. But what I felt would be best for United, if they thought I was a loose cannon, was to leave.۪۪ - Roy Keane, November 2013.
With the former Irish captain having sustained an injury at Anfield the previous month, Keane was forced to seek a club whilst injured - a difficult challenge. The Manchester United support were still reeling from the bombshell when Keane announced in the middle of December that he was signing for Scottish side Celtic, leaving behind the animosity and bad blood he had incurred from his old mentor. So that's a wrap - what do you think? Have there been any glaring omissions? As always, feel free to leave your thoughts and opinions in the comment section below.
