10 Shocking Spurs Departures That Nobody Expected

8. Clint Dempsey

Clint Dempsey was never exactly a Spurs superstar, so it wasn't exactly devastating news when he left - but the speed of his departure and the destination of his departure were quite shocking. Don't get us wrong, Dempsey was liked by the Spurs faithful and his tenacity on the pitch was appreciated by the club's fans, but he wasn't the world class striker they were looking for. That said, he was a more than capable player who came up with some important goals - including two goals in two different Premier League victories over Manchester United. He scored seven goals in 29 Premier League games in his one and only season at White Hart Lane, but he left to return to America with Seattle Sounders for a fee of around $9 million. Even Dempsey himself expressed his shock at the move, saying "I had two years left on my contract at Tottenham. To be honest with you, going back to pre-season, I thought I would be there but I guess it was just timing."
