10 Shocking Sunderland Departures That Nobody Expected

Black Cats that shockingly left Stadium of Light.

Every team has had a few good players they've felt shocked at losing over the years. Ask any Sunderland fan, however, and they'll reel off an extensive list of popular figures who were booted from Wearside when it was least expected. Over the years we've seen many players leave with little surprise, especially during our times as a yo-yo club, in which whole chunks of the team were often sold off as a necessity. Sometimes, however, a departure can shock a fanbase to the core. Whether it be a long-term servant of the club, or a newly acquired player who seemed to be fitting in perfectly, a badly-timed move can really shake up the momentum and balance of the team - as Sunderland fans well know. Some are now known as traitors, players who pledged their loyalty and allegiance to the club before leaving for money. Others are remembered as victims of poor management and transfer policy, figures who the fans would have loved to see remain on Wearside who were sadly forced elsewhere. Finally, some are notorious for the manner in which they left the club. Sometimes a player will leave under such a storm of controversy, with such a startling lack of grace, that it taints their time at Sunderland forever. Here are the ten Black Cats we were most utterly shocked to see let go.
