10 Most Sickening Injuries In Sport History

4. Anderson Silva (UFC)

Anderson Silva is the most recent member of the club of horrendous sports injuries, as this particular incident took place in December of 2013. The Ultimate Fighting Championship is not a sport for the frail or brittle, as it's more or less what the WWE would be like if it were real. Add to that Silva is both a former champion of the sport and a mixed martial artist, and you get an idea that you're dealing with a particularly tough character. So when this happened in a fight against Chris Weidman, and Silva drops to the floor in a fit of sheer agony, you know that something's gone wrong. Weidman checked one of Silva's ferocious leg kicks, and a mixture of Silva's power and Weidman's shins of steel resulted in the snapping of the Brazilian's tibia and fibula. Like Cisse's injury, this is immediately shocking and disturbing, especially when you see the lower half of Silva's shin swinging of its own accord, but it is the sheer power and speed of the break which is most sickening, particularly when it's happened to someone who is prepared for a great deal of pain. Silva's own force effectively destroys his leg, which I would imagine adds an extra layer of annoyance to a great deal of suffering. Silva was rushed to hospital and immediately had his fibula set without surgery, but a rod had to be set into his tibia to support it through his recovery. It has apparently not yet been decided on whether we'll see a comeback from Silva, but you have to imagine it would take a great feat of the body and mind if he were to manage it.
