10 Sports Deaths That Were Caught On Tape

2. Benny Paret Dies In Boxing Match

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KfwSSJ1mYc8 Benny "The Kid" Paret left his family behind in Cuba so he could box in the United States. He won the Welterweight Championship on May 27, 1960 and his first title defense was against Emile Griffith on April 1, 1961. Griffith knocked him out in the 13th round. They fought again and Paret won the title back in a split decision. Paret eventually lost the title to Gene Fullmer. Even though his first two meetings with Griffiths were brutal matches, Paret agreed to a match at Madison Square Garden for ABC's Friday Night Fights. At the weigh-in, a fight almost broke out when Paret patted Griffith's rear and whispered "Maricón, maricón" which is a Spanish gay slur. Griffith lunged at him, but the two were broken up. On March 24, 1962, the fight began and almost came to an end in the sixth round when Paret nearly knocked out Griffith, but he was saved by the bell. Then came round 12, the announcer, Don Dunphy speculated that "this will probably be the tamest round of the entire fight." Seconds later Griffith came out strong and got Paret in the corner with his arm tangled in the ropes. Griffith managed to land 24 punches to the head of Paret; essentially beating Paret to death on live broadcast television. The referee finally intervened and ended the fight. Paret slumped down in the corner and never woke up. He died ten days later in the hospital.
