10 Spurs Players Who Weren't Worth The Hassle

6. Hossam Ghaly

For those of you who even remember this Egyptian midfielder, it will only be for one big flashing memory sticking out - his temper tantrum against Blackburn Rovers. Just an substandard, inoffensive midfielder, Ghaly would have seeped to the abyss of most Premier League supporters' memories at this stage, such were his unspectacular contributions to the Spurs cause. However, the major strop that he threw when substituted off the park in May 2007 will not have been forgotten by Spurs supporters in a hurry. Having replaced winger Steed Malbranque in the first half, he turned in a wretched and erratic display, leading to boos and jeers from a disgruntled home crowd. Once his number was signalled to be humiliatingly removed from the pitch with seven minutes remaining, Ghaly tore off his jersey and absent-mindedly hurled it to the turf. Boss Martin Jol stared ahead in a stoic manner, but he must have been seething on the inside. Spurs fans did not take kindly to the act of disrespect, immediately breaking into a rendition of 'You're not fit to wear the shirt'.
''I am just so angry with myself. I have always considered it an honour to wear the Tottenham shirt and I never intended to show any disrespect. I knew things weren't happening for me out there, my play was terrible and I could hear the crowd jeering me. I know my reaction was totally wrong. I have apologised to the manager and I also want to apologise to the fans. I hope they don't judge me on this incident alone.'' - Hossam Ghaly, May 2007.
But judge him on that incident alone they did. Affording him the same courtesy he showed the shirt on that summer's eve, a chorus of boos echoed around the ground when Harry Redknapp signalled for Ghaly to warm-up following an interim loan spell at Derby County. As a result, the Egyptian was spared what would surely have been a public lynching, and he never did pull on that white strip again.
