10 Sunderland Cult Heroes From The Premier League Era

6. Lorik Cana

Lorik Cana is the closest Sunderland have ever come to hiring a genuine serial killer. The combative Albanian was utterly terrifying to anybody who faced him, a quality adored by the masses in the crowd. He was a no-nonsense, hard-as-nails midfielder who could make Lee Cattermole look like a pussycat in comparison. The pair only conspired together on a handful of occasions, but those days were glorious. Sometimes he would go way too far with his lunges, but it was all part of his show. The hard man tag simply wasn't enough to describe the monstrous midfielder. He faded towards the second half of his only season before moving on for Champions League football, but he caused enough havoc in the first half for his reputation to be launched upwards, and his name is still uttered with longing around Sunderland to this day.
