Arguably Newcastle's greatest ever goalkeeper played for Sunderland before signing on at St James' Park. The second most capped Irishman of all time played no less than 17 games at Roker Park while on loan from Blackburn Rovers in 1996. Little more than a year after leaving the North East however, Shay was making his way back up the A1 after becoming one of the first signings of the Kenny Dalglish era. It was a great thing that Given didn't become too attached to the red and white half of the region as he would go on to make 462 appearances for Newcastle, playing a significant role in one of the most successful eras of the club's modern history.
