10 Things Romário Wants You To Forget

5. His Links To The Brazilian Criminal Underworld

Romário had never considered a life in politics for when the time came to hang up his well-worn boots, but after his second daughter was born with Down Syndrome in 2005, his attitude changed. After noticing there was no one in a position of power to give those living with a disability a voice in politics, the ex-pro decided to do it himself, and successfully ran for election as Deputy of Rio in 2010. Yet even when pursuing a noble cause, Romário could not avoid stumbling into controversy. In 2005, the evergreen striker's earlier attempts at activism resulted in him being asked some awkward questions. After participating in a charity game in a Rocinha favela organised to raise money for children with Down Syndrome, Romário was invited to meet a 'member of the community'. Several months later, the Samba star was forced to explain to police his relationship with Erismar Rodrigues Moreira - an infamous drug lord within Rio, better known as Bem-Ti-Ve. Romário's connection with the drug-dealer ran deeper than a chance meeting. In the same year, the footballer was forced to demand custody of his son Romarinho from ex-wife Monica Santoro after the eleven year old had been introduced to Erismar by his maternal uncle. Though both incidents appeared innocuous on Romário's part, further questions were raised when Baixinho was pictured alongside drug traffickers wielding guns.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
