10 Things UFC Wants You To Forget About Matt Hughes
8. White Supremacy
His position as an executive in the company means that a certain standard of behaviour is expected out of Matt Hughes. Now no longer a fighter, we dont expect the self-proclaimed farm boy to involve himself in any behaviour which could reflect negatively on the premier promotion of the MMA world. Such unwanted behaviour might include getting drunk, getting into a bar-room brawl or making inappropriate comments on twitter. However, prior to his appointment to the Vice President of Athletic development and Government Relations position, Hughes was involved in an incident which made these other fighter problems seem trivial. At a signing event Matt was pictured holding a white supremacist t-shirt with the words White Boy emblazoned across the top. With a distinctly fascist look to the shirt as well as SS-influenced runes imprinted on the central skull, it should come as no surprise that such controversy was caused by the photo. Its hard to blame Matt entirely for this incident from what his manager voiced to the media at the time, Hughes was handed the shirt by a group of bikers at the signing and asked to take a photo with it. Matt was unaware of the white supremacist beliefs the shirt implied and was not knowingly endorsing such ridiculous beliefs. However, it didnt reflect well on the 170-lb legend as he had been criticising President Obama at the time. Without doubt an incident the UFC would rather we forget.
