5. They Are The Only Reigning Champions To Be Relegated The Year After
After finishing as runners up twice, 1937 was a landmark year for Manchester City as they finally won the First Division. Whilst the winning points margin might only have been three points, Citys goal difference was a whopping +46, far and away the best in the division. Runners up Charlton Athletic had a goal difference of +9 for example. In their championship-winning season, City managed to score 107 goals. Manchester United were relegated in the same season, adding extra sweetness for City. The following season was something of a catastrophe however, as City managed to finish second bottom and were relegated. In doing so, they became the first (and so far only) reigning English champions to be relegated at the end of their defence. Not only that, but in 37/38 they managed to be the only team ever to be relegated from Englands top division with a positive goal difference, even going as far as being the top scorers in the division. Almost predictably, Manchester United were promoted in their place.
Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
