Lee Cattermole is the sort of maverick player who would be treasured in many other countries around the world. Plenty of fans and pundits are quick to express their disgust at how soft the Premier League is becoming, yet they victimise a wholehearted player like Cattermole.

For all the outside media may think that Cattermole’s seen more red than a Spanish bull, his temperament and discipline has been under control for many years now.

He has just two red cards in over four years, one of which was dubious and the other given after the match had ended. Cattermole has got his discipline under control.

He may be the most booked player this season, but that’s one of the reasons why he’s the number one unsung warrior. He is not fazed by getting booked. If the team’s in trouble, you can guarantee Cattermole will take a booking to get them out of it.

There’s much more to Cattermole’s game than cards. Last season the Sunderland side averaged 0.7 points without Cattermole, compared to 1.23 with him. This season tells a familiar tale. 0.63 points without him, 1.13 with him.

Not bad stats for a player perceived as a ‘liability’ by many.

That bandwagon must be getting rather full.
