6. Don't Try To Be UFC-Lite
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aRHBoG2S_Q This is a hard one. However, Bellator had a format that stood out. While it appears that it's being dropped, there's no need for a UFC-lite organization. To some extent, we have that already with the WSOF. If Bellator does drop the tournament format entirely (and they shouldn't, they should just downplay it a bit, but that doesn't seem the direction so far, aside from tournaments already under way), they will need to find another way to stand out. How will they do that? Well, that's going to be a tough one for Scott Coker. Coker's Strikeforce managed to stand on its own by having the best heavyweight roster around (Fedor, Bigfoot Silva, Josh Barnett, Daniel Cormier, Arlovski, Kharitonov, Alistair Overeem, Fabricio Werdum), having the best women's MMA offering, and by putting on some fun spectacle fights (think Dan Henderson vs. Fedor). They had most of the "Skrap Pack" with Nick Diaz, Gilbert Melendez, and Jake Shields. Oh, and they launched a heavyweight tournament that had fans salivating. It didn't go as planned, but Daniel Cormier won it, and he remains undefeated and is now at light heavyweight gunning for Jon Jones. Bellator doesn't have the depth that Strikeforce did. Hell, Bellator and the WSOF combined don't have that depth. So they're going to have to find a way to stand out, and if it isn't going to be tournaments, then Scott Coker has his work cut out for him.
