10 World-Class Players You Didn’t Know Man Utd Nearly Signed

6. Mick Harford

Despite winning the FA Cup, the European Cup Winner€™s Cup and the League Cup in 1990, 1991 and 1992 respectively, the ultimate aim for Alex Ferguson in the early 90€™s was the win the League. Each season saw a steady improvement in league form, but there were pieces missing from the jigsaw. United were hindered by injuries and by an absolute pudding of an Old Trafford pitch. Ferguson always advocated a passing game, but at home the conditions were so bad that the players were resorting to hoofing the ball forward. Ferguson didn€™t feel his attacking options at the time were suited to that, which is why he turned his attention to 33 year old Luton hard-man Mick Harford. Hardly prolific, Harford was the typical English target man; tall, strong and uncompromising. Ferguson went as far as sounding out The Hatters about a transfer, but pulled out, opting for a new pitch instead, perhaps.
