11 Things We Learned From York City Vs Newcastle

8. Gouffran Is NOT A Defensive-Midfielder - Who'd Have Thought It?

In one of the most bizarre decisions of the night at Bootham Crescent, Steve McClaren chose to field Yoan Gouffran in the very engine room of the Newcastle United midfield alongside Mehdi Abeid. Gouffran was deployed there a couple of times by Alan Pardew and a few more by John Carver, admittedly, but McClaren's decision to do so was strange to say the least. Is McClaren simply looking for a way to fit Gouffran into his side? If so, then the experiment failed miserably - it will not come as a surprise to any Toon fan out there that Gouffran is anything but a natural defensive-midfielder. To be fair on him, he ran his heart out all evening, but the endeavour failed to produce any positive results. Hopefully McClaren will never resort to such an experiment again...
