11 Transfers That Prove English Players Are Hideously Overpriced

2. James Milner To Manchester City (£26 Million Part Exchange)

Manu Fernandez/AP/Press Association ImagesManu Fernandez/AP/Press Association ImagesIf ever there was a ludicrous amount of money paid for someone who is essentially a utility man and a workhorse, this is it. Milner is mainly a midfielder, but he can operate all over the pitch - in very average fashion all over it, incidentally - and Manchester City paid Aston Villa the princely sum of £26 million for him in 2010, with around £6-8 million of that believed to be represented by the inclusion of Stephen Ireland in the deal. Don't get us wrong, Milner has his moments - his goal against reigning European champions Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena in the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League was not only brilliant, it also proved to be the winner - but most of the time he looks like a confused wild animal and he is prone to misplaced passes and clumsy errors. He finds himself, typically, in almost every England squad - another sign that the national team is in decline - but he has lost his place at Manchester City and is expected to move on. God knows how much the team from the Etihad Stadium will want for the 28 year old, but we're damn sure they'll get nowhere near what they paid for him.
