2. Didier Drogba
Dave Thompson/PA Archive/Press Association ImagesThis is sensational. Didier Drogba could have been a Celtic player. It's not a joke, and it's Momo Sylla's fault that it never materialised. It turns out Drogba wasn't the slightly arrogant high-flyer that we've known him to be for so long. in his early playing days, Drogba lit up French football with stunning performances for Guingamp and Marseille. He had become one of the most exciting players on the market, but that's not what his compatriot thought of him. Sometime shortly before he left Marseille between 2003 and 2004, Drogba apparently approached Mo Sylla about the possibility of coming to Celtic. Now at this time, Celtic had an incredible frontline: Henrik Larsson, Chris Sutton and John Hartson. Mo Sylla thought Celtic's attacking team was too strong for Drogba to break into, and actually
told him not to bother trying. First of all, who blocks any player from coming to their team? Why would Sylla do this? His discouragement towards Drogba could never, ever bring a positive result. As we all remember, the trio of Larsson, Hartson and Sutton didn't last a long time. If Celtic had brought Drogba in, even if he wouldn't have gained much play initially, he certainly would have got a chance to play more within good time. And frankly, he was easily good enough at the time to be an instant hit. It was Drogba! Of course, when he did eventually move to Chelsea, it cost the Blues £24 million. So it may not have happened anyway. It's nice to dream of what could have been though...
