15 Worst Ever England Players

2. Anthony Gardner

Number of caps: 1 Had the history of the England team been a little different, Zat Knight and Anthony Gardner could have formed the central defensive partnership for the Three Lions. We can all be thankful it didn't happen. Spurs defender Gardner's call for his one and only cap came the year before Knight's, he came on as a sub in a friendly against his manager's home country of Sweden. Not looking to start any conspiracy theories here, but is it just a coincidence that Sven Goran Eriksson picked a defender clearly not up to standard for the one and only time against his home country? Gardner spent a further four years at Spurs but didn't get another look-in for his country. It was another baffling selection of a player who had no future as a regular for England. Just be thankful we don't live in the parallel universe where England rely on the Gardner/Knight defensive axis.
