15 Worst Ever England Players

3. Jay Bothroyd

Number of caps: 1 If you thought Jay Bothroyd had retired, you thought wrong. These days he's cashing in on his status as an ex-England international in Japan for Jubilo Iwata and before that he was plying his trade in Thailand for Muangthong United. He was playing in England when he won his cap, albeit in second tier and for a Welsh side, Cardiff. At the time of his surprise call up by Fabio Capello, Bothroyd had been linked with call ups for Jamaica and Guyana, both of which he was eligable for through his parentage. The quality of team vying for the striker's allegiance should have given the nod to manager Fabio Capello that maybe, just maybe, Bothroyd was not of England standard. That said, the squad for the friendly against France in 2010 was hardly choc full of goalscoring class. Competition was provided by the likes of Andy Carroll and Carlton Cole, so in that context it's perhaps no surprise that Bothroyd got in as a sub. It's also no surprise that after a totally anonymous appearance in an England shirt, his existence was immediately forgotten about.
