Oh my. You'd be forgiven for not remembering Lilian Laslandes even existed. As Niall Quinn's back became an increasing burden, the hunt for a replacement striker should've been a number one priority. After watching Laslandes play, it looked as though the hunt for a striker was co-ordinated by a Newcastle United fan. The French international cost £3.6 million, which at the time was a huge amount for Sunderland, and came with a top goalscoring pedigree in Ligue 1 for Bordeaux and Auxerre. He rolled onto Wearside and became another striker to flop with a big fat zero in the 'goals' column. His 12 appearances were also largely forgettable and a bust-up with manager Peter Reid saw the Frenchman shipped out on loan deals to FC Koln and Bastia, less than six months after signing for Sunderland. Promptly after the loan deals, his contract was cancelled and was allowed to join Nice of a free transfer. He was worth less than a chocolate teapot, and only half as useful.
