15 Worst Ever Sunderland Premier League Signings

6. George McCartney

It's time for another go at the "I'm an average footballer. Get me a move out of here!" game. This time, the winner is... George McCartney! And which manager stumped up the cash to bring the former-Sunderland defender back to Wearside. Yes, of course. It's none other than Mr Roy Keane. No wonder there's so much built up anger behind the beard... George McCartney was one of the faint glimmers of hope from the 'dark days' which saw Sunderland plummet out of the Premier League with record low points. He left for West Ham, but was re-signed by Sunderland for £4.5 million. It was a move that should never have happened. Time and time again he'd be tormented at left back, like, seriously destroyed. He didn't particularly make horrendous errors, mainly because he was nowhere near the ball to be able to make the mistake. He'd back off and off and off until BOOM. Uh oh. The winger's in the box, picked out a man and the ball's in the net. As for his skill on the ball, let's just say that some of his hit-and-hope floated balls out of defence are currently orbiting Jupiter.
