20 Best Rangers Players Of The Modern Era

3. Ally McCoist

It's tragic in many ways that a generation of Glasgow Rangers fans will remember Ally McCoist as the bumbling manager with next-to-no grasp of tactics, because the man was one of the best players to ever pull on the famous blue jersey and ply his trade at Ibrox Stadium. That should never be forgotten, despite his misgivings as the gaffer. McCoist as a player had his ups and downs in blue. Not favoured by Graeme Souness in the 80's, it wasn't really until Walter Smith took charge towards the end of the decade that 'Super Ally' was born. An unbelievably prolific goalscorer (McCoist found the goal over 250 times for Rangers), the man wasn't adverse to having a tear in his eye when netting an important goal, many of which clinched games he was involved in. There's a myth amongst supporters of rival clubs that Ally McCoist was a tap-in specialist, but the truth is that he scored a wide variety of goals, and surely must rank as one of the best players Rangers have ever had, certainly up front. From 1983-1998, McCoist represented Rangers brilliantly, and even though he wasn't the best manager, his achievements as a player should never be forgotten.
