Playing during a period famed for its violence, Woodburn was sent of five times in five seasons, in an era where dismissals were only dished out for serious acts of assault. His final act of thuggery came in 1954, when after taking exception to a bad foul, the centre back reacted by head-butting a Stirling player. In a disciplinary hearing the following month, which lasted only 4 minutes, Woodburn was given a life ban, which was ultimately revoked 3 years later, but by that time, his career was over.
