6. Jose Carlos Fernandez
http://youtu.be/WWddrYfA9uc Some players think that they are better than they are, and try to pull off fancy flicks and tricks that end up costing their teams dearly in the end. Jose Carlos Fernandez is in this category, because he had the gumption to believe that he could score a goal with the power of his mind. When the ball bounced agonisingly close to the goal with only Fernandez around, any sensible man, woman or child would simply touch it into the net and get ready to celebrate. But, instead of this mundane strategy, Fernandez deliberately avoids touching the ball with the attention of demonstrating his best Professor Xavier impression. Strangely enough, the ball stayed out of the goal, which means Fernandez went from wannabe X-Men to soon-to-be expendable. 5. Diana Ross
http://youtu.be/MPbJLG65iMg Football, unlike cricket, is entirely unpredictable, and all of the preceding misses are testament that anything can happen at any time. A football fan always has to expect the unexpected. Even when an event is entirely scripted and certain to take place, that still is no guarantee that things will go to plan. In the opening ceremony of the USA World Cup in 1994, the entire world watched as Diana Ross led the celebrations of the biggest football competition arriving on their shores for the first time. At the culmination of her performance, exhausted from her attempts to keep up with her recorded voice, she was to score a penalty to launch the competition properly. With everything rehearsed and organised, Ross provided the biggest miss of the tournament by flashing the ball past the post. And the spectacle of the grand opening of the World Cup in an instant dissolved into an episode of You've Been Framed.
