20 Worst Squads In FIFA World Cup History

8. Mexico (1978)

When Mexico are good, they’re definitely an undercard side to keep an eye on, but when they’re bad, Mexico are truly awful.

Mexico probably plays every World Cup with the belief that no matter how bad they do, they will always outperform their 1930 counterparts. Sadly, in 1978 they failed to outdo the inaugural Mexican World Cup side, and clocked in the worst World Cup finals performance the country has ever seen. Drawn against Poland, West Germany and Tunisia in the group stages, Mexico would probably have hoped for at least a handful of points.

Tunisia stunned Mexico in the opening game of the groups, handing them an unforeseen 1-3 defeat, stagnating any chance of momentum. Mexico went on to be utterly annihilated 0-6 by West Germany, before bowing out to a 1-3 loss against Poland. Mexico conceded 12 goals in their three matches, leaving them the worst goal difference of any team in the entire 1978 World Cup.
