30 Football Cliches That Badly Need To Die

17. The Red Mist Has Descended

Given the amount of corny metaphors in football, it's safe to assume that most football commentators are frustrated poets. 'The red mist has descended', a cliche that signals a player losing his temper to a rather alarming degree, is a prime example. However, hearing what could be a line from the pen of Dracula author Bram Stoker leveled at a player who has just broken someone's leg, put his boot through the advertising hoardings or cannoned the ball off the head of a twelve year old fan in the crowd, is at best bizarre, at worst outright creepy.
