The only thing worse than seeing a bunch of valiant underdogs sink to an injury time winner is seeing the man in charge of the top dogs scripting the whole thing with his wristwatch. Yet just after Michael Owen had slammed the ball into the corner of Man City's net, the cameras cut to show Fergie frantic on the sideline, pointing at his watch in a bid to, er, 'encourage' the referee to end the game. Right on cue, the ref blew the full-time whistle, and at that moment 'Fergie time' was born. Becoming an instant cliche and surviving way past the point of that man's retirement, the phrase is still whipped out whenever a wonky amount of extra time has been awarded. But still, it's been three years since the great man hung up his watch, and it can't only be Man United fans that are sick to death of this cliche by now.
