5 Athletes To Watch At The World Athletics Championships

1. Usain Bolt

Usain BoltEvents: 100m, 200m, 4x100m Relay The only reason a significant proportion of the viewing public will tune in will be to see this man in action. Athletics has become the Usain Bolt show, with his every move and antic lapped up by the camera's. The Jamaican sprinter has a famously lax attitude towards the sport both on and off the track, and his on-camera antics have endeared him to millions around the globe. It's clear that his talent is unparalleled, so much so that the 26-year-old sprinter's antics have yet to deprive him of success. So, can Bolt do the triple, again? Last time out in Daegu, he was disqualified for a false-start in the 100m final, depriving him of the most prestigious of his medals. This time around, he's raring to go, having already run 9.85 seconds for the 100m, and 19.73 seconds for the 200m. The importance of the "Bolt Show" to these championships is probably at it's highest level ever, after a disastrous summer for athletics, and for sprinting in general. The fastest man over 100m this year Tyson Gay tested positive not once, but twice for performance-enhancing drugs, and fellow Jamaican team-mate Asafa Powell and former world champion was among three high-profile Jamaican athletes to test positive this summer, along with 3-times Olympic medallist Sherone Simpson and Olympic Gold medallist Veronica Campbell-Brown. Bolt has been stringently tested all throughout with no worries, and the fervent hope is that the world's most marketable athlete remains as clean as a whistle, as he is, without doubt, a reason to believe, in a sport damaged by drugs.
