5 Awesome Moments For The British Lions In Australia

Now, I like to think of myself as a kind, gentle person, not one to revel in the misfortunes of others. In this case however... There can't be many rugby fans who haven't heard of David Campese. God knows he's tried to get everyone in the entire world to listen to him enough over the past twenty five years. His usual method is to criticise Northern Hemisphere rugby with the usual cliches about it being boring, unskilled, etc. Mainly England, but he's graciously made a special effort to include the Celts whenever the Lions come calling. The 1989 series saw him trying to take centre stage once again. In the run up to the tests he labelled the touring party as playing one-dimensional, ten man rugby, the age old criticism. As we've already seen, the Aussies took the first test easily, with the Lions roaring back in the second. The third test was poised at 12-9 with just twenty minutes remaining. Camped deep in the Australian 22, Rob Andrew went for broke with a drop goal which sailed wide and into the arms of the waiting Campese behind the posts. Looking up he saw that he only had Ieuan Evans to beat and threw a pass out to Greg Martin. Well, in his general direction anyway. The ball fell to the ground and Evans dived on it to score. This proved to be the decisive moment, the Lions went on to win 19-18, and Campese was pilloried by the nation. Suitably humbled, he learned from the experience and became a quieter, more reflective player, who never had a bad word to say about anyone. Yeah, right. Let's just watch that again, shall we?

Richard has been playing video games since the days of the BBC Micro, (and incidentally when is Chuckie Egg going to get a reboot?) He is currently available for the post of Head of Marketing at Nintendo, seeing as no-one else seems to be doing the job. He's also a major fan of fantasy/sf books and is just waiting for his novel about an assassin who doesn't wear a hood to get picked up.
