5 Awesome Moments For The British Lions In Australia

2. Brian O'Driscoll

You do wonder whether the Australians had done their homework for the first Test. It's as if they'd not bothered watching any of the Lions warm-up games, or had dismissed the performances as a fluke. How else do you explain the fact that Chris Latham decided that showing Jason Robinson the outside was a good idea, or that despite some sublime performances, especially against Queensland, they seemed unaware of the attacking potency of Brian O'Driscoll? This moment took place in the phenomenal first half of the first test in 2001. The Lions were already 12-3 up, thanks to that stunning try by Robinson, but at this point the Aussies were starting to feel their way back into the game. Then, from a maul formed near the left touchline, Rob Howley spins the ball out to Wilkinson who in turn feeds it to the Irish centre. With lightning acceleration O'Driscoll blasts in-between Nathan Grey and George Smith almost before they know he's there. This break was amazing enough, but the way he nonchalantly sidesteps his way past Matt Burke on the way to the line elevates this try to one of the best ever scored by a Lion. It was Robinson scorching Latham first, then two minutes after Burke replaces him, it was his turn to be grasping at thin air as a red shirt disappeared past him at speed. Not a good day to be an Australian fullback, but a brilliant day to be a Lions fan.

Richard has been playing video games since the days of the BBC Micro, (and incidentally when is Chuckie Egg going to get a reboot?) He is currently available for the post of Head of Marketing at Nintendo, seeing as no-one else seems to be doing the job. He's also a major fan of fantasy/sf books and is just waiting for his novel about an assassin who doesn't wear a hood to get picked up.
