5 Candidates For The 2014 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot
4. Lionel Messi
It is incredible to think, that Lionel Messi is still only 26-years-old. Entering his late twenties, Messi is generally acknowledged as one of the greatest players to have ever played the game of football. The 2014 World Cup is the Argentines second chance to make his national side World Champions for the first time since 1986. His goal in the opening match against Bosnia Herzegovina sealed a 2-1 win for his side and saw him take one step closer to Gabriel Batistutas international goal scoring record of 56 goals. He then rescued his teammates from embarrassment when he scored a spectacular winner against Iran in the final minutes of their second group game. Messi had a disappointing season with Barcelona last season in La Liga, but still managed to score 36 goals in all competitions illustrating his scoring credentials and proving why he has to be a contender for the Golden Boot.
