5 Lessons From The Fallout Of UFC 178

2. Ready Or Not, Conor McGregor Is Coming For Aldo

You can say he's rushed, you can say he's overhyped, but for the second fight in a row, Conor McGregor not only called his shot but called the round he would knock his opponent out in. He really hasn't faced anyone on the level of Jose Aldo before, but he probably will shortly, as it is already known that McGregor will be cageside at Aldo's next title defense. It makes a lot of sense from a marketing standpoint: McGregor stopped Dustin Poirier in the first round of their fight at UFC 178 with a quick knockout. Poirier didn't like it, but he knows he got caught. McGregor is the only name close to the top that can draw and that Aldo hasn't already beat, so why risk putting him in against Edgar, Mendes, Swanson, or the Korean Zombie when he's a fresh face with a huge following? He's popular enough that he got his own min-press conference following UFC 178. This fight gets booked in a huge venue and will be Aldo's best selling PPV to date, which is great news for the struggling champ. The fact that McGregor is being fast-tracked to the title shot is moot at this point.
