5 Lessons From The Fallout Of UFC 178

1. There Not Much Left for Mighty Mouse At Flyweight

Demitrious "Mighty Mouse" Johnson dropped to flyweight when the division was first created after losing a bantamweight title shot to Dominick Cruz. Two years later and he's cleared out everyone at 125lbs, some of them twice. His big win Saturday night was something we called back in our predictions for UFC 178 - a submission, something Johnson hadn't done in some time. Thing is, he's that good. At 125 he's one of the few fighters who can finish, and finish in a variety of ways, and if he can't finish you, he can still wear you down in a decision. Speed, strength, and agility - it's the perfect mix. And now here's the problem: would going up a weight class help Johnson at this point? He's one of the few stars at flyweight and is a dominant champ. He struggled at bantamweight before. Yet flyweight is super thin right now. There's a potential third fight with Ian "Uncle Creepy" McCall, and a second fight with John Dodson, but that's about it for marketable fights. Then he either goes up, or continues knocking down lower top ten fighters a la his submission of Chris Cariaso Saturday. Which he can keep doing, but it's not really what the fans will want to see in the long run.
