5 Match Winners From Premier League Opening Weekend

4. Gabby Agbonlahor (Arsenal 1-3 Aston Villa)

Like me, many were expecting Arsenal to get off to a winning start to their 2013-14 season. A home tie with Aston Villa who had narrowly avoided relegation last season. The Gunners finished 2012-13 on a high by winning 11 out of their last 14 Premier League games as they beat rivals Tottenham to 4th spot and that final Champions League spot. This included 4 clean sheets in their final 6 games. Saturday didn't start the 2013-14 season as they finished the last. Instead, they were a mess at the back with Wojciech Szcz™sny not doing a lot to help his defence. Laurent Koscielny saw a red card on the opening weekend for the second time in his career, whilst both Szcz™sny and he conceded penalties. Both of those penalties were won by Gabby Agbonlahor who caused Arsenal problems all day on the counter attack. Christian Benteke took the credits by rebounding home his first saved penalty and scoring the second, but it was the all-time leading Aston Villa top scorer in their Premier League history that caused the problems for the Arsenal defence that helped Aston Villa pick up 3 points on the road to start their season.
