2. Brendan Rodgers
Of all the promoted teams coming to the Premier League since its inception 20 years ago Swansea City were by far the most assured and unfazed of the lot. This was in no small part due to the abiding philosophy of Brendan Rodgers. Pass, pass, pass was a breath of fresh air to the more park-the-bus tactics of most newcomers. After their sensational season, Rodgers was awarded the poisoned chalice of helming Liverpool this term. A place where even the clubs most favored son, Kenny Dalglish, failed in resuscitating the sleeping giant. Whatever happens at Liverpool cannot be wholly attributed to Rodgers. He has inherited an average squad and aging talisman in Steven Gerrard, but that problem pales in comparison to the state of affairs off the pitch. No longer are Liverpool considered a force domestically, their status has reduced the appeal for potential new recruits. Clint Dempsey, who opted for Spurs this summer, is a prime example. The words coming from the owners are reassuring in their predictability; Rodgers is the man to lead the Reds to a bright future. He will have time and he will have financial backing and it goes on even to the extent of comparisons to the great Bill Shankly. However, those words may turn hollow if one of Liverpools worst starts in living memory continues (not since 1911 have Liverpool started a season so poorly). They are currently languishing in the relegation zone without a single victory and with all the goodwill in the world you have to wonder how long Rodgers has before panic seeps into the minds of the clubs American owners. His removable of Carroll was hardly delicate and his inability to plan for a replacement beggars the question of his continued employment. He is a good manager, but is he good enough to succeed where so many have failed? So far the answer is a resounding no. Verdict: Dry clean that lucky interview suit now.
