I could write a lengthy article (and probably already have, given my enthusiasm) about how different this sport is from other sports, and go on and on and on until you go to YouTube and check it out. But the fact is that I can't. The only thing I can comment on is Kronum's sense of legitimacy. As cool as Slamball was, it was essentially a gimmick; a real-world version of NFL Blitz, but with basketball instead of football. Even arena football (which I have personal history with) is a derivative of the outdoor game. Kronum is the first real attempt at doing something new, something that is decidedly set apart from the rest of the sports out there. And they aspire to be that fifth major sport (in America, at least) for people who love watching sports. Bear in mind that this entire endeavor has been undertaken by amateurs. The players don't just play, they have key roles in the off-field operations of the sport to help it grow. They aren't a multimillion-dollar conglomerate looking to put out another product for the teeming masses to throw their money at. But when I watch their games on YouTube (and yes, they do have "technical difficulties" from time-to-time, but who doesn't?) I see how much hard work and effort they've put into their product, and can't help but wonder why ESPN isn't foaming at the mouth trying to land a television deal for it. But that's what's so great about it! They don't need a TV deal, they have their audience already. If YouTube is the social media future of entertainment, why not capitalize on it and allow your fans to not just watch games live, but let them rewatch their favorite games, give them new content to soak up? This writer has probably watched every video on the Kronum League YouTube channel, because there's always something interesting to watch. They want to bring something new to the table, something that can push sport forward into the next generation.
