5 Things Football Fans Don’t Understand About The Sport

5. €œI Can Do Better!€

From opinions on players, to managers and even to owners, every fan seems to have a different opinion on what their club (and every other club) should be doing and how they should be performing. It is expected by the fans at most of the top clubs that they should be winning every single game and every trophy, although that is close to impossible due to the strength of the competition. So at one point or another, probably every fan has had the thought that they would be able to manage the team better than the actual manager. It€™s the equivalent of watching a film and then stating that you would be able to direct the film better than the director did, despite having no qualifications to do so. This is exactly the same principal. There are even games dedicated to that very philosophy. Do you think you can do better at managing Liverpool than Brendan Rodgers? Then load up Football Manager on your computer and you can try. Even though the line between reality and fantasy can seem blurred at times, it is important to remember that it is just a game. Obviously, the reality is very different. Just take a look at any manager working throughout the game, even to some of the lowest professional levels. These are people who are academically qualified to coach athletes and also have many years of experience, whether as a coach or a former football player. There is also being able to manage the relatively small tasks of maintaining consistent results, maintaining the respect and admiration of highly paid athletes and being able to managing expectation from above. That is just a small part of the role, of course. Most of the time, these types of comments are made in jest. But you will probably know of someone who€™s said, €œI can do better!€ and meant it.
