The Guardian

As Britain’s best Anglo-Irish footballing partnership since Kevin Phillips and Niall Quinn were playing on Wearside, Max Rushden and Barry Glendenning excellently front The Guardian’s popular football podcast. Glendenning’s acerbic wit coupled with Rushden’s unending optimism makes for an enjoyable look at the biggest football stories from all around the globe.

They are joined on this adventure by respected journalists from The Guardian and beyond. Regular panellists include Jonathan Wilson, Andy Brassell, Priya Ramesh and Paul MacInnes who each provide a different viewpoint from which to dissect the stories. The involvement of journalists is what sets this podcast apart, they have their finger on the pulse of the game and can offer insight that isn’t always available to the layman making it an essential listen for those who wish to know more about breaking stories.

The podcast mostly focuses on English football but there are regular segments where they talk to experts in different countries around Europe. Be it Paolo Bandini in Italy or Sid Lowe in Spain, the breadth of discussion on the show knows no bounds and therefore gives the listener an appreciation of the issues in a broader context.

Similarly to The Football Ramble, they produce two shows a week with a Monday and Thursday podcast so there is plenty of content to enjoy.

Despite being relatively new to football writing, he doesn’t shy away from having bold opinions – just try and tell him Frank Lampard isn’t the best midfielder of the Premier League era.
