Over the last few years, podcasts have entered the mainstream and become one of the main ways that people can utilise their otherwise wasted time. Whether you’re cooking, commuting or even ironing, there is a plethora of content that you can use to turn these otherwise mundane activities into a way of expanding your mind.

Football is a global industry and consequently there are so many leagues that it can become difficult to keep up. Podcasts are a great way to distil all this information into a form that filters out all the unnecessary details and just leaves the key points.

They also give the opinions of those who don’t have a voice in the mainstream media. In an industry dominated by ex-players, it is refreshing to hear the views of journalists or even just people who are interested in football. The creative freedom that podcasting allows is paramount to their ability to cater to people from the most die-hard fans to those with only a passing interest in the game.

This accessibility does come at a cost, however, the ease with which anyone can make a podcast has caused the market to become saturated in the past couple years, therefore finding a quality one has become somewhat of a needle in a haystack. In this spirit, here’s a list (in no particular order) of some of the best podcasts that you can enjoy throughout the new season.

6. The Football Ramble

Put simply, The Football Ramble is the benchmark for a good football podcast. Their blend of insightful analysis and offbeat humour makes for an engaging and informative listen. The show started in 2009 and has risen to become the most popular independent football show in the world - lofty heights for a podcast that started in a kitchen.

They currently produce two shows a week that are centred around the Premier League: a Monday show that looks over the previous weekends games and a Thursday preview show for the upcoming weekend. This approach provides comprehensive coverage of the games which is perfect if you’re looking to learn more about the most competitive league in the world.

The high points of the podcast come from the chemistry between the four presenters. The line-up is comprised of football broadcasters Marcus Speller and Luke Moore, radio DJ Pete Donaldson and comedian Jim Campbell who each bring their unique perspectives to the biggest issues in the sport. Their friendship gives the podcast an endearing quality that makes the show feel like a chat you’d have with some mates in the pub.
