6 Reasons David Beckham's Olympic Snub Was Right

2. Team GB Need An On-Pitch Leader Not a Figure-Head

Beckham would be a ceremonial figure-head, included because of what he represents, rather than what he tangibly offers to the team on the pitch, and while that will be good for the dressing room, what is really needed is an on-field general who will lead by example. Beckham used to be that sort of player - in fact he was the archetypal on-pitch leader, willing to run further and harder for the cause than any of his fellow players. He used to lead by example, increasing the performance of other players through proximity, precisely because his effort and workrate made those who weren't as keen look bad. That won't be the case now - Beckham won't be able to keep up with teams of under 23 players, no matter how much his spirit would be willing, so his opportunity to lead by example would be significantly diminished. But that doesn't mean he should have been over-looked entirely, because of the impact he could have on the team in the dressing room: the former Manchester United man still talks with passion and could represent enough of a ceremonial figure-head to command a place on Stuart Pearce's coaching squad. And if he isn't able to take that role, it will be to the cost of the team spirit. That still doesn't mean he should be on the pitch, though.
