8 Football Teams Who Were Stripped Of Their League Titles

6. Torino - Divisione Nazionale, 1926-27

No football-mad nation has been involved in more match fixing scandals than Italy, so it is perhaps fitting and entirely unsurprising that their first ever national championship ended without a winner thanks to a case of bribery.

In more recent times it has often been Juventus who are the beneficiaries of dodgy backroom deals, but back in 1927 it was them (or rather one of their star players) who was offered money to help out their local rivals and title frontrunners Torino.

With Torino fighting it out for the top spot with Bologna, the Derby della Mole between Torino and Juventus was a vital game. So, Torino executives offered Juventus full back Luigi Allemandi 50,000 lire to throw the game and help Torino to victory.

Torino won the derby 2-1 and went onto secure the Divisione Nazionale title. The only issue was that Allemandi had actually played really well for the Old Lady, doing nothing to assist their rivals at all.

So, when he came to demand his 50,000 lire after Juve lost, a fierce argument broke out over whether he had earned it. The argument was overheard by a journalist who reported on the scandal and Torino had their title revoked.

Torino would continue to argue that Allemandi didn't actually throw the match and therefore they won fair and square, meaning that the title should not have been taken from them, but the fact that they tried to bribe an opposing player was evidence enough.
