By far the biggest case of 'one who got away' in the history of Rangers, Sir Alex Ferguson was hours away from signing a contract to become manager of the club in 1986, but held out for the Manchester United job instead. According to Ferguson's talking head quotes during a DVD chronicling the career of his friend, Walter Smith, the man was all set to take over at Ibrox, but really liked the challenge that the Man Utd vacancy posed. After a troubled start, Ferguson revolutionised The Red Devils, turning them into one of the biggest football brands on the planet and an almighty success on the football pitch. Maybe, just maybe, he could have done the same for his boyhood heroes, Glasgow Rangers. Previously a player for the club between 1967-1969, Ferguson was used as the scapegoat for a loss to Celtic, but there were also rumours surrounding the club's distaste that he had married a Catholic. Of course, that was a different time, and nothing of the sort would be considered a problem nowadays, but the fact is that Alex Ferguson left Rangers with a bitter taste in his mouth. Perhaps that played into his decision to turn down the manager role at Rangers in the mid-80's, joining the red half of Manchester instead. One of the most successful bosses in the entire game's history, Sir Alex Ferguson would have surely also been a smash hit at Ibrox Stadium had he signed on the dotted line. What other managers do you know of who nearly became Rangers boss? Did you know about any of the ones listed here? Let your voice be heard down in the comments section below!
