8 Players Man Utd Had No Hope Of Signing This Summer

8. Mats Hummels

Perpetually linked with the £30 million-rated Borussia Dortmund since Louis van Gaal's appointment in May, Red Devils supporters might as well have saved their excitement for a more realistic target. While mercurial playmaker Shinji Kagawa was easily lured from the German heavyweights in 2012, Hummels has been a lot more vocal in his allegiance to the club who rescued him from a stagnating career in the Bayern Munich reserves five years ago. One of the key performers in Germany's victorious World Cup campaign, the 25 year old would have no shortage of suitors if he were to decide that Dortmund were no longer big enough to accommodate his sizeable talents. With Barcelona in the hunt for a couple of centre-backs this summer, one would have assumed they would have sized up the German giant as opposed to splashing out a combined £30 million on ageing pair Jeremy Mathieu and Thomas Vermaelen, had they been giving an inkling that he was after a move. Adamant as ever that his future lies in the Bundesliga, his boss Jurgen Klopp was likewise refusing to entertain Man United's lingering interest.
''He is going nowhere. He is staying with us.'' - Jurgen Klopp, August 2014.
Having seen the likes of Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski join Kagawa in marching towards the exit signs in the last couple of years, there is no way that the eccentric boss is willing to entertain the prospect of another star player walking out on the club.
