8 Players Man Utd Had No Hope Of Signing This Summer

1. Arturo Vidal

The long-running transfer saga of the summer has centred around the most dynamic box-to-box midfielder in world football, as van Gaal has attempted to woo him from the clutches of the Old Lady in Turin. With the Dutch boss sparking media furore surrounding Vidal's future directly before the World Cup by stating that he 'always wanted to buy Vidal', the speculation has only intensified in the recent months. However, the reason that the Chilean left Bayer Leverkusen in 2011 was to pursue a 'life-long ambition' of Champions League glory. At 27 years old, it would appear that the combative midfielder's best chance of lifting that silverware whilst still in his peak would be in Turin rather than Manchester. It would certainly be a gamble to take the plunge and spend a season outside of European football altogether, at the peak of his abilities. When van Gaal has eventually assembled a squad in a healthy enough status to challenge for the trophy, the former Bayer Leverkusen man may have lost that added bite and energy that separates him from the rest. The club still haven't given up on Juventus' star man, as they look to launch a club record bid for the South American. But with Champions League football remaining the ultimate for Vidal, perhaps he sees Turin as a more likely destination for that trophy to be lifted in the coming years.
