8 Potential Game Changers For Football In The Near Future
4. International Leagues
As the Avengers assemble and the Justice League unites, European football’s top clubs convene. But rather than save the world, the crème de la crème of European football come together to discuss a way of making the rich richer and the poor irrelevant.
Since the 1990s rumours of a potential European Super league have circulated throughout the footballing world. Whilst, the idea is yet to be realised, football’s favourite philosopher Arsene Wenger in 2009 posited that it would be the reality in 10 years. Whilst Arsene’s prophecy may have been incorrect regarding timescale, the idea of a breakaway league has gathered pace and support in recent years.
The top European clubs claim that the Champions League and their own domestic leagues fail to pit the best against the best, and subsequently top tier sides aren’t sufficiently remunerated for their quality and pedigree. Although a few outlines have been sketched of how this league might look, it seems that given the current uncertainty surrounding football, this idea may have to return to the back burner.
However, if the lower leagues begin to go under, expect the Premier League to investigate the potential of an English Super League, rather than throwing life jackets out to the likes of Barnet and Swindon.
