9 Players You Didn't Know Blackburn Almost Signed

8. Zinedine Zidane

The other half of Christophe Dugarry's proposed switch to Lancashire involved Dalglish missing out on one of the most iconic midfielders that football has ever bore witness to. Similarly to his aforementioned compatriot, Zidane stepped onto the international stage in 1994, netting twice for France against the Czech Republic on his debut, and announcing himself on the world scene in some style. Running parallel to Zidane's exploits at Bordeaux, Blackburn enjoyed Premiership success, with club captain Tim Sherwood acting as the brains in midfield. And thus, when the idea to sign a young Zidane was brought to the door of Jack Walker, the chairman saw no need to fix what wasn't broken and seemed bemused at the idea of replacing the Englishman. After over 300 appearances for the likes of Juventus and Real Madrid, as well as 100 games for his country, Dalglish is probably still kicking himself that the transfer didn't go through, despite the Scot no longer having a working affiliation with the club. Picking up trophy after trophy, whether it be for his own individual brilliance or the result of a successful campaign, Zidane will remain as one of the more unforgettable figures in footballing history - but not one who donned the blue and white halves of Rovers.
