The Deal: £35m From Newcastle When it became clear that Liverpool were about to lose Fernando Torres to Chelsea for an eye-watering £50m, they needed to invest that money quickly to make sure they weren't left with limited options up front. For some reason they turned their attention to Newcastle's large hairy centre-forward, and cajoled Mike Ashley into parting with him for £35m. Newcastle fans took to the streets to wail at the time, but it became very obvious very quickly that he wasn't worth close to half of that, and Liverpool were shown to have had their pants royally pulled down over the deal.
