Arsenal Transfers: 10 Strikers Arsene Wenger Must Sign Before Window Shuts
1. Edinson Cavani
It’s ambitious and it’s bold and that’s exactly why Arsenal should sign Edinson Cavani.
To the club’s credit, they have surprised the fans by pulling an expensive rabbit out of every summer or two, counter-acting their more conservative transfer market strategy with a Mesut Ozil or an Alexis Sanchez. Sadly for Gunners fans, this simply doesn’t happen often, which is why there is a litany of top-quality players within the Arsenal side but only a handful of world-class talent. And of course, just the two FA Cups in 11 years.
While Man Utd - a club who will be playing in the Europa League let’s not forget - have entered the market with force and purpose, belying their lowly league finish with the signing of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and the negotiations with Paul Pogba, Arsenal have spent the summer pussy-footing around whether to make a bid for Gonzalo Higuain or Alexandre Lacazette. This club needs to be stronger in the transfer window, rather than cowering in the corner while their rivals snaffle up the real talent.
Perhaps the Gunners are hindered by a fear of rejection which is why they continue to settle for more modest targets? Even then, the board must have been crippled by the ignominy of a Leicester player turning them down this summer.
Anyhow, Edinson Cavani is one of the best strikers in the world and can boast a record to rival most. The Uruguayan’s importance to PSG may have increased following Ibrahimovic’s departure, but Wenger needs to demand his arrival. What have the club got to lose?
