Arsenal Transfers: 5 Alternatives To £10m Victor Valdes

5. Tim Krul €“ Newcastle United

Krul Having seen off long standing substitute Steve Harper, Newcastle€™s number one came to prominence last season with a string of superb performances in the clubs march towards European competition. An excellent shot-stopper, Krul is also taller and better at dealing with crosses into the box than he first appears, and has a physical presence that calms his defence. He is also comfortable with the ball at his feet. Despite Newcastle's shaky form and defensive re-shuffles this year, the Dutchman's form has remained solid. His stock has risen at international level as well, having now taken over from the out of favour Martin Stekelenburg as the Netherlands first choice goalkeeper under new manager Louis Van Gaal. Equally importantly, Arsenal could comfortably beat any wage Newcastle could offer without breaking their wage structure. He also has the advantage as counting as 'home grown' for squad registration purposes. In the against column, he has no more top-flight experience than Arsenal's current number one, and Newcastle's recently found financial stability would mean he could well cost more than Valdes. At 24 he also represents a replacement rather than competition for Szczesny, which may be a waste of the Pole's potential.
