Arsenal Transfers: 5 Alternatives To £10m Victor Valdes

4. Julio Cesar €“ QPR

When the Brazilian international €˜keeper signed for Queens Park Rangers last summer, it was a major coup for the West London club. Only two years away from winning a Champion's League and Serie A double, and being proclaimed 'The best goalkeeper in the World', he was easily the participant in the Mark Hughes transfer window jamboree with the highest reputation. After a difficult start, and a period of playing second fiddle to Robert Green of all people, he has adjusted to the Premier League, and has recently enjoyed a rich vein of form. QPR's recent defensive record has owed much to Cesar's influence, and he was outstanding at The Emirates earlier in the season. Despite being prone to the odd mistake, his agility, shot-stopping and experience would prove both a complement to 'The Pole in the goal'. In many ways he is an older, taller, more vocal Victor Valdes, who is better on crosses and familiar with the English game. With the Loftus Road club looking odds on to drop out of the top flight, his stay in Shepherds Bush could be a short one, as his wage packet, international aspirations and reputation within the game are unlikely to be suited to the Championship. If Rangers do get relegated, he is likely to be available at a reasonable price, and the QPR owner, Tony Fernandes, has shown himself willing to cut his losses with players who aren't happy. Equally, his wages, though significant, are likely to be significantly below those of the Barca stopper. He also has the advantage of being the senior pro that could mentor rather than fully replace Szczesny.
